以前このブログで少し触れたことのある「翻訳できない世界のことば」を偶然、書店の「哲学・現代思想」コーナーで発見したのでつい買ってしまった。
手にとってみて初めて気が付いたのだが、意外なことにこの本は作りも中身もミニサイズの絵本なのであった。
だから買って「さあ読むぞ！」と取り掛かって５分くらいでもう読み終わっているという、余りといえば余りにもシンプルな本なので、要約や紹介の余地があまりない。「りんご＝アップル」のように一対一で対応する言葉を用意できないような、各国語にチラホラある特殊な、いわば孤立した単語を紹介しているという、ただそれだけの本である。
だからブログにも書きにくいと思っていたのだが、先ほどTumblrでこの本の中の言葉のベストテンが紹介されていたのを発見した。
例えば１位は「Waldeinsamkeit」である。
意味は以下の通り。

４位には日本語の言葉もランクインしていて、誰でも知っている言葉である。
さて、それは何でしょう？

正解は……、
「木漏れ日」でした。私は「木漏れ日」と聞くと必ず「もののけ姫」冒頭の場面を思い出す。馬上の人物に木漏れ日が降りかかるカットがあって、そこに一番感銘を受けた。

10. Mångata (Swedish) - The word for the glimmering, roadlike reflection that the moon creates on water.
英語はちょっと読めないという方は、日本語訳の本をご購入下さい。
プレゼントにも向いているし、そう高い本でもないので、読んだら人にあげるという手もある。短いので物足りないようだが、その点こそがかえって喜ばれる本であるともいえる。
